19'41' Mauser byf Black Widows SS Rig  SOLD

This is a 41 (1941) Chamber dated Mauser "byf" built for the German Schutzstaffel SS after the contract for the P-38 was in production. The holster displays the Afrika Korps tropical hat emblem indicating that the owner was at one time associated with the SD Einsatzkommandos - Tunis  under the command of Kommandoführer SS-Obergruppenführer Walther Rauff who was active in Tunisia in 1942-43. The SS had their own procurement system.  This Parabellum is 9mm with a 4" (100mm) barrel that is proofed and serial numbered to the gun.  Serial number placement is in the military ("exposed") style. The thumb safety is marked "Gesichert" and extractor "Geladen."  This example has all matching numbers.  (1130)

These are known to collectors as the 1934 Model (the general period when the rework of the DWM/BKIW ended and new production began).

In 1941 production was on a war time footing at Mauser in Oberndorf. The German military's decision to switch to the less expensive P38 in 1938 had begun to reduce the contracts to  Mauser to produce Lugers. In mid-1942 Mauser also tooled up to start producing the P38. However, there was a large requirement to arm all the various police units throughout Germany and the captured territories .

War time production also discarded the extra steps of "straw bluing" the trigger, thumb safety, locking lever in favor of the complete blue process.  So to we begin to see the dark colors of the hot salt blue treatment. The grips and magazine bottoms were beginning to be made out of bakelite because of the shortage of wood and aluminum.

The Waffen-SS (German for "Armed SS", literally "Weapons SS") was the combat arm of the Schutzstaffel ("Protective Squadron") or SS, an organ of the Nazi Party. The Waffen-SS saw action throughout World War II and grew from three regiments to over 38 divisions, and served alongside the Wehrmacht Heer regular army, but was never formally part of it. It was Adolf Hitler's will that the Waffen-SS never be integrated into the army: it was to remain the armed wing of the Party and to become an elite police force once the war was over.

The first toggle link is marked with the byf Mauser code.  There is the "V" rear sight on the rear toggle link and the last two digits of the serial number appear.   This is a basic collector gun, everyone has one in their collection.  The extractor is marked "GELADEN". The bore is good with distinctive lands and groove.  The thumb safety is new style, and blued. The thumb safety is marked 'Gesichert' and safe is down.  The black plastic grips are what designates this gun as the Black Widow.

Serial number placement is in the military ("exposed") style.   The serial number appears on the front of the frame, on the side of the locking bolt, on the trigger, on the bottom of the barrel, the side plate,  the left side of the receiver, the safety bar, the sear bar, the rear connecting pin, and on the extractor.

The Black Widow
The issue of these "black" appearing Parabellums to mostly police and Gestapo units and their use of as props in era war movies gave them the "sinister" connotation associating  the Luger and the Nazi's.  Ralph Shattuck, the world renowned Luger collector for over 40 years, is credited with applying the term "Black Widow" to these pistols of the 41-42 era with black plastic grips and magazines. Aptly applied the term has stuck with collectors the world over.

This is a marvelous rig features and excellent 41 Mauser byf Black Widow Luger,  a very good 1941 dated holster with a loading tool, a period belt, belt loops and a chest strap, an extra FXO black bottom magazine and an SS (Schutzstaffel) belt buckle.

It is entirely subjective to give any Luger a rating of excellent or fine, just as it is to declare it xx% blued or strawed. Few Lugers are out of the box new and these are premium priced. Bluing percentages is like Beauty, in the eye of the beholder.   We strive to provide pictures so you can judge for yourself if the gun meets your criteria.

This is an all matching gun with the serial number and gauge markings on the barrel and the "y" suffix on the receiver.  The "y" suffix tells us this was one of the last 1941 models that were built.

A very rare picture of Der Führer Adolph Hitler swearing in a Schutzstaffel SS unit by grasping the flag and with two fingers extended on the right hand swore their oath of allegiance to Adolph Hitler

This is a standard 1934 Model gun designated by collectors as the "Black Widow" 41 byf Mauser. This Luger has all matching numbers. The finish is nicely blued with honest holster wear on the end of the barrel and side plate. This Luger has a hold open latch and stock lug.

Front line SS Officers, one with the early crushed cap the other with the more formal peaked cap.  Note the rider in camouflage suit.  The SS were the first army to adopt the camouflage uniforms.

The extractor is marked "GELADEN". The bore is good with distinctive lands and groove.  The thumb safety is new style, and blued. The thumb safety is marked 'Gesichert' and safe is down.  These end of contract production Lugers (the P38 was under production as the side arm) were mostly issued to the SS troops that had their own procurement system.  That and the fact it was issued to SS police battalions that did the occupation law enforcement behind the front line troops.

The FXO on the magazine tells us that it was manufactured by C. G. Haenel Waffen-U-Fahrradfrabrik in the city of Suhl. The Eagle 37 is the German military acceptance stamp used at the Haenel Factory commonly called the Waffenamt. Proof. These magazines were salt blued/black with extruded steel, black plastic bottoms and a new zigzag spring with the P.08 markings. These magazines were supplied for mostly Mauser Lugers bearing the Code 42 or byf on the toggles and are exceptionally durable magazine.

The inside of this gun is in very good condition. You can see all the matching numbers on the small parts including the trigger, the sear stop safety, and the proof on the barrel. This Luger has been cared for well and is looking for another good home.

The Eagle 655 Proof reflects the  that this is an 1941 produced Luger because the E655 changed in late to E135 in 1942.

The Swastika/Eagle Proof with the full wings appears on the receiver, the barrel and the left side of the front toggle link.  This proof began in September 1939 and simply represents the army acceptance.

This Luger has a deep blue, almost commercial color to it.  It is in very clean condition and an exceptionally fine piece.

This Parabellum is all matching including the rear connecting pin which was ordered in March 1932 to be marked to the weapon to prevent their being exchanged by mistake.  Additionally on Mauser made guns the rear of the receiver was extended 2mm at the rear connecting pin to protect the pin in full recoil.

Without a doubt, the SS Schutzstaffel was the most feared, despised an infamous organization of the Third Reich. The SS was formed in 1925 as a small subunit of the SA with the mission of serving as the Fuhrer's personal bodyguard. Members of the SS were picked for their mental and physical adeptness and were recognized as the "elite" within the Nazi Party. A member had to have finished his twenty-first year and undergone a long probationary period of eighteen months. During this period, the candidate was tested rigidly to observe how well he lived up to the tests of faith, honor, and unconditional obedience.

Meine Ehre heißt Treue   Which translates "My Honor is Loyalty".

The SS buckle has the spread wing eagle (Alder) which grasps a wreath around the swastika and surrounded by the motto of the SS Meine Ehre heißt Treue (My Honor is Loyalty).  The buckle has been painted for field use so not to reflect but one can still see the RMZ markings inside along with the manufacturers code and the SS Runes.
The holster is in minty condition with white stitching and beautifully proofed, with all the fixtures intact and functional.

This is a great rig and an excellent 41 Mauser byf Black Widow Luger,  a superior 1941 dated holster with a loading tool, a period belt, belt loops and a chest strap, an extra FXO black bottom magazine and an SS (Schutzstaffel) belt buckle with a Nazi emblem from the Afrika SD Einzatzkommando Tunis which was stationed in Italy but went to Africa after Rommel's defeat at Tubruk in 1942 and stayed until 1943. As with any Luger it has a tale tell. This historic complete rig of all matching Luger, two magazines, loading tool, dated 41 holster with a chest strap, period belt and SS belt buckle;   Any questions to Josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com.  This gun may be withdrawn without notice for in-store sale.
