This 1940 Dated Parabellum in a SA [Sturmabteilung (Storm troopers)  rig with a period belt and holster and a  Type II SA Belt Buckle.  The Luger is all matching and the leather is a brown/maroon color that matched the SA brown shirt uniform.  This is a great gun for the Mauser collector and those who follow the early development of the Nazi party.  This is a complete SA rig with the all matching P-08, really nice 1940 dated holster, a period belt  and Type II SA brass belt buckle plus two matching magazine and a proofed loading tool. (1709)

NOTE: Photographs taken today with the high mega-pixel camera show more than we sometimes can see with the human eye. Magnified close-ups show us tool marks and natural surface conditions that one normally doesn't see in the ordinary handling of the weapon.  Photographs are copyrighted, all rights reserved, any extraction, reproduction or display of gun pictures without the express consent of the Phoenix Investment Arms is strictly prohibited. In 1921 Adolf Hitler formed his own private army called Sturm Abteilung (Storm Section). The SA (also known as stormtroopers or brownshirts) were instructed to disrupt the meetings of political opponents and to protect Hitler from revenge attacks.  Hitler's stormtroopers were often former members of the Freikorps (right-wing private armies who flourished during the period that followed the First World War) and had considerable experience in using violence against their rivals.

The SA wore grey jackets, brown shirts (khaki shirts originally intended for soldiers in Africa but purchased in bulk from the German Army by the Nazi Party), swastika armbands, ski-caps, knee-breeches, thick woolen socks and combat boots.

This is a 1940 Pistole 08 military gun manufactured by Mauser. This piece is a 4 inch (100 mm) 9mm Parabellum.  In late 1939 Mauser changed their code from S/42 to 42 and changed the military acceptance to the straight wing eagle with the swastika. The rear of the receiver has the characteristic Mauser "hump" and the rear main axel pin is serial numbered to the gun.

This is an all matching Luger with walnut grips that are inspector proofed and serial numbered to the gun. The magazine is a type III extruded fxo magazine.

A very clean WWII specimen, built during the early part of the war this blue and lack of milling marks is a real testament to the old timey gun makers whose excellent we treasure today in the age off polymer guns to need to meet the test of time.

The SA was the basis from which was founded Hitler's power and it morphed into the SS; until the point the SA & SS grew to the point they challenged each other and when Hitler found that Ernest Röhm  the head of the SA was a homosexual he initiated an arrest warrant for the leaders of the SA and Röhn in particular which ended his career.

After Hitler took power in 1933, the SA became increasingly anxious for power and saw themselves as the replacement for the German army. This angered the regular army (Reichswehr) who were already quite annoyed at the Nazi party. It also led to tension with other leaders within the party who saw  the SA as a dangerous and radical organization, especially since common SA practice was to swear loyalty to local SA commanders rather than Adolf Hitler or the Nazi Party as a whole.

This is a 1940 Chamber dated Mauser byf built for the German Sturm Abteilung SA after the contract for the P-38 was in production. The SS had their own procurement system. This is a standard 1934 Model gun designated by collectors as the "1940" Dated Code 42 Mauser. The first toggle link is marked with the S/42 Mauser code.  There is the "V" rear sight on the rear toggle link and the last two digits of the serial number appear.

Serial number placement is in the military ("exposed") style.   The serial number appears on the front of the frame, on the side of the locking bolt, on the trigger, on the bottom of the barrel, the side plate,  the left side of the receiver, the safety bar, the sear bar, the rear connecting pin, and on the extractor.

The serial number matches throughout the gun. Under the serial number on the barrel is the gauge markings when it left the factory.  These are the two matching magazines from this rig.  It is very difficult to find a rig with all matching numbers and magazines.

Above: Ernest Röhm with Adolph Hitler was originally the adjutant of the Paramilitary SA under the organizational leadership of Hermann Goering. Goering took the unemployed and street thugs that made up the early party membership and shaped them into a private army.  Röhm's problem, along with being openly gay was that he didn't recognize the supremacy of Hitler so SS Reichsführer Himmler organized his demise.

The holster is Waffentamt proofed and dated with the manufacturers cartouche.  The thread is still white so the holster has never been died or re-issued.

The inside of the holster is very clean with still subtle leather, a tool pouch and pull strap. An almost off the shelf preservation of both the P-08 and holster rig this is really an A+ collector's gun.

Above: The manufacturer's cartouche and date in a close up of the back of the holster. The loading tool is proofed with the Eagle 655 proof is the same as the proofs on the gun.

The Extractor is marked "GELADEN" German for "loaded'. When a round is in the chamber it raises to tell the shooter visually that the P-08 is loaded and then tactilely when felt.  The Parabellum has the short sear and a hold open after the last round us fired. The two magazines are FXO extruded with the matching serial numbers

This is type II Brass SA Belt Buckle with the outspread eagle wings and the swastika within the wreath.  There were progressions of these buckles one more rarer than the next,  The was the very beginning from the Freicorps to the Brownshirts [SA] Sturmabteilung (Stormtroopers).

This is an original SA solid brass buckle made between 1936 and 1940 for the Storm Battalion Trooper. Very few SA buckles are marked with the RZM proof stamps required by law in January 1935.  This buckle is matched to the dated 1940 holster; same style as pictured below being worn by Adolph Hitler.

The term Sturmabteilung predates the founding of the Nazi Party in 1919. It originally comes from the specialized assault troops used by Germany in World War I utilizing Hutier infiltration tactics. Instead of a large mass assault, the Sturmabteilung was organized into small squads of a few soldiers each.

Early SA Insignia

Hitler & Goering in an early 1920's SA Rally.

The first official German storm troop unit was authorized on 2 March 1915; German high command ordered the VIII Corps to form a detachment for the testing of experimental weapons and the development of appropriate tactics that could break the deadlock on the Western Front.  On 2 October 1916, Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff ordered all German armies in the west to form a battalion of storm troops. First applied during the German Eighth Army's siege of Riga, then again at the Battle of Caporetto, their wider use in March 1918 allowed to push back Italian lines tens of kilometers.

The inside of the gun is clean with indicating that it has been cared for many years. The bore is good. This gun is a great Luger being in such good shape and bearing all the correct proofs and markings to make it a text book 1940 date. See Kenyon Lugers at Random Page 278.

Here is the Luger in full recoil with the rear main axel pin exposed. The frame is a Mauser frame as you can see the 2mm hump that Mauser built into the frames to protect the rear main axel pin. In 1932 the Reichswehrministerium issued an order that the rear connecting pin be serial numbered to the gun which was required by order in 1933.

Every Luger has a tale to tell and this one is no exception. It has been to war and with it the proofs of the war time Mauser production.  Throughout the Parabellum are the tiny numbers on the parts all matching the last two digits of the serial number.

The first toggle link is marked with the  Mauser code 42, this was one of four logos that Mauser used during the war; S/42, 42, byf and the Banner.   There is the "V" rear sight on the rear toggle link and the last two digits of the serial number appear. This is a very clean gun with an excellent barrel and all matching including the magazine. The inside of the weapon has been cleaned and oiled and exhibits the care of previous owners.

It is entirely subjective to give any Luger a rating of excellent or fine, just as it is to declare it xx% blued or strawed. Few Lugers are out of the box new and these are premium priced. Bluing percentages is like Beauty, in the eye of the beholder.  We strive to provide pictures so you can judge for yourself if the gun meets your criteria. This Luger is identified as a curio and can be send directly to C&R licensees and above.   Questions to:  josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com

The right and left side of the receiver shows the E655 proofs and the straight wing Alder (Eagle with Swastika) that made the final acceptance stamp.  On the left side the E655 proofs are on the top quarter of the barrel

The SA (STURM ARBEITLUNG) was the first Nazi paramilitary group to develop pseudo-military titles for bestowal upon its members. The SA ranks were adopted by several other Nazi Party groups, chief amongst them the Schutzstaffel (SS), itself originally a branch of the SA. SA men were often called "brown shirts" for the color of their uniforms (similar to Benito Mussolini's black shirts).

From the height of the Nazi power we have the "1940" dated Mauser Code 42 Parabellum in a complete SA  (Sturmabteilung) rig with a 1940 dated brown early proofed holster. The all matching 1940 dated Luger with two matching magazines, a Mauser Eagle 655 proofed loading tool and period belt withy an early Type II SA brass buckle. Any questions to josef@poenixinvestmentarms.com This Luger, as all the others, have already been discounted for a cash sale.
