During World War I, the division served primarily on the Eastern Front, seeing action at the battles of Gumbinnen and Tannenberg, and the 1st and 2nd Battles of the Masurian Lakes.

After Russia's defeat in the war, on February 13th 1917 the division entrained at Mitau sector and was posted at various times to Chavli,Kovno, Aix-la-0Chapelloe, Laege, Louvain, Bruxelles, Audenarde and ended the war occupying positions around Antwerp and along the Maas in Belgium.

During the war it was engaged in a great deal of heavy fighting and suffered severe losses.  It was never an attack division but rather sent in to hold areas under attack.  In November 1918 it was withdrawn and returned to Prussia.
