The Swiss Army deserves the credit for being the first military organization to have discovered the qualities of the Parabellum achieved through the efforts of Georg Luger. DWM was unable to fulfill the Swiss contract beginning in 1914 ;after the 1st WW DWM started producing commercial Swiss variations from 1919-1930. In May 1930 DWM was sold to Mauser and all the equipment and unfinished guns an parts were shipped to Suhl.

This is a 7.65mm caliber with a 120mm (4 3/4") barrel. This is a commercial gun ordered by a Swiss vendor to fulfill the demand for the Luger in Switzerland. The all matching gun is proofed with the German Eagle N and does not bear the marks of the Bern Factory or Swiss Military proofs.  The gun comes with a military holster and the late sling with a buckle as most of the Swiss competitors were ski troops and wore the weapon over their shoulder for quick access.

In 1897 Georg Luger personally demonstrated the Borchardt automatic pistol.  The conclusion of the Swiss Kriegamaterialverwaltung was that the Borchardt was too big, had poor balance and was too complex.  However the 7.65mm cartridge was an overwhelming success for the Swiss.

The first batch of guns from Mauser to the Swiss Contract was between 1933-33 Ser #542v-#599v with some having a crown U (Oberndorf) and 8 stave barrel. The second batch was between 1873v and 191v in 1935.  The  majority had the 8 stave Mauser  Barrel Logo and two were reported with the DWM logo.

The clean lines of this  rare classic commercial Luger, no import marks and a one of 217 Parabellums made by Mauser from the finally crafted Lugers with the Mauser Banner Logo.

Above Left: The serial number on the barrel and receiver and classic "V" is a closed "V" with a difference in the later "v' series  used by Mauser .  Above Right: The magazine is also matching serial number.

The Swiss holster is a minty as the gun with the extended straps, buckle and snaps makes this a handsome addition to anyone's advanced collection.

Above Left:  The finish is minty on this Swiss Mauser; you can see the Eagle N civilian proof that puts this after January 1940 following the new 1939 German proof act.  Above Right: the Luger in full recoil you can see the "'82" on the rear main axel pin which was the result of the 1932 Reichswehrministerium  order that the rear connecting pin be serial numbered to the gun.

The third group 3600v-3900v, covers 301 Luger pistols. In 1936 Mauser decided to prepare a sufficient quantity of the frames, receivers and barrels to satisfy demand from Swiss Commercial dealers. The Parabellums produced in 1936 have the 5 and 7 line Banners, Eagle N Test Proofs, and highly polished before bluing by sandblasting the mill marks making these beautiful examples of the '06 model Luger. The early sales have the Crown U and later sales (1940) have the Eagle N.

Above you can see the absolutely minty inside of the Parabellum and the like new finish on all the parts. This is the long frame with the early rust blue finish and the straw color heat blue finish on the small parts.
The Swiss Cross & Sunburst is a reflection of the early model Swiss Logo that was replaced with the Shield and Cross. In this production run only 51% had the Swiss Cross and the balance were blank chambers. after this batch of which the subject gun appears to be in the last run, the Swiss Cross was no long struck for shipments to Switzerland. Apparently Mauser was hedging its bets regarding selling the Swiss the entire order. The Mauser banner is deeply struck and has seven lines substantiating the period of production.

Side by side examination of the receiver proofs of this finely graded Parabellum

Above is further examination of the side plate, locking lever, serial numbered trigger, the front of the sear and the Eagle N.

To date this Parabellum we know that the Eagle N is a 1940 result of the the 1939 change to the German Proofing Law.  Also indicated is the "Geladen" (German- Loaded).  Above right is the cross in sunburst Swiss designation deeply rolled above the chamber in a beautiful addition to this Luger.

One might conclude, war issues included that at the beginning of 1940 Mauser had on hand some 35% of the Swiss models that they had prepared four years earlier in 1936. It is not recorded when these models left Oberndorf but from observation only 25 had the Swiss Cross rolled over the chamber, 22 of the 49 had blank chamber in the serial number block and two were dated 1939 as a military model.  It appears that Mauser was cleaning out the racks and from this exercise some beautiful and unique Parabellums were produced in the finest quality and as in the begging to the end the Swiss finished in as the classic beautiful Luger.

It is entirely subjective to give any Luger a rating of excellent or fine, just as it is to declare it xx% blued or strawed. Few Lugers are out of the box new and these are premium priced. Bluing percentages is like beauty, in the eye of the beholder.  If you need additional pictures to complete your buying decision email josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com

Swiss collectors will immediately recognize the importance of this variation and the advanced collectors seeking a practically unfired example of the Mauser contribution to the Swiss legacy of the classic Luger will want this in their collection. Seldom found and rarely located in this minty condition this gun is museum quality.  Sales are subject to in-store sale so call before placing order.  Any question or additional pictures email josef@phoenixinvestmentarms.com
